Portadown Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of 19 year old Manchester United goalkeeper Jacob Carney on a loan deal until the end of the season.
Carney joined Manchester United at the age of 16 in 2017 becoming a under-18s regular and going on to make his under-23 debut in a 2-1 win over Newcastle in January 2020. His performances earned him a call up to the first team squads warm weather training camp in Malaga in February 2020 where he accompanied then senior goalkeepers David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant and Nathan Bishop.
The 19-year-old signed his first professional contract with Manchester United in May 2020 and spent part of the 2019/20 season on loan with non-league outfit Stockbridge Park Steels, the club at which Leicester’s Jamie Vardy started his career, as well as a loan spell this season with Northern Premier League side Brighouse Town.
Portadown manager Matthew Tipton had the following to say on Jacob’s arrival
I’m very pleased to get Jacob in on loan from Manchester United.
We have felt that we wanted to strengthen the GK department & through my connections with Alan Fettis at Man United we were offered Jacob & after watching his videos we had no hesitation in taking him in.
Jacob has had experience playing in the rough & tumble of non league in England which was a massive positive for us.
I must place on record my thanks to all at Manchester United for helping this move go through so smoothly.
Jacob will wear squad number 25 and will provide competition for the current Ports goalkeepers as manager Matthew Tipton strengthens his pack ahead of the Danske Bank Premiership recommencing on the 23 January 2020.
