Portadown are in BetMcLean League Cup quarter final action this evening (Tues 9 Nov) when we take on Cliftonville at Shamrock Park, kick off 7:45pm.
Cliftonville are coming off the back of a 3-0 win over Dungannon Swifts on Saturday while the Ports held champions Linfield to a 0-0 draw at Shamrock Park.
The last time the two clubs met was only last week (Tues 2 Nov) with Cliftonville running out comfortable 4-0 winners at Solitude thanks to a Joe Gormley brace, a Paul Finnegan OG and a Ryan Curran penalty.
Portadown have a pretty sorry recent record at Shamrock Park against Cliftonville losing five of the last six and without a win in the last thirteen on home soil. The last win over Cliftonville at Shamrock Park came back in February 2011 with goals from Alan Cawley and Kevin Braniff. In fact Portadown are without a win against Paddy McLaughlin’s men home and away in the last sixteen games with the last victory against Cliftonville coming in January 2014.
In League Cup matters Cliftonville dumped Portadown out at the quarter final stage in 2014 thanks to two Joe Gormley goals in a 2-0 victory at Solitude with Cliftonville going on to win the trophy by beating Ballymena Utd 3-2 in the final. Cliftonville were also 3-1 winners over the Ports in the quarter final stages in 2012 – Chris Ramsey had given Portadown a first minute lead but goals from Joe Gormley, Liam Boyce and Diarmuid O’Carroll seen the Reds win 3-1 and again they would go on to lift the trophy by beating Crusaders 4-0 in the final. Not to be outdone Portadown would knock Cliftonville out in the third round on their way to lifting the trophy in 2009, Ports would run out 4-3 winners on aggregate over two legs – drawing 0-0 at Shamrock but winning 4-3 at Solitude in a real classic. The theme seems to be whenever these two sides meet in the competition the victor goes on to win the competiton!
