Portadown are back on their travels tomorrow (Sat 18 Dec) as we make the trip to Milltown to take on Warrenpoint Town in the Danske Bank Premiership, kick off 3pm.
Warrenpoint Town come into the game on the back of a 6-1 defeat in the semi final of the BetMcLean League Cup to Coleraine at the Showgrounds on Tuesday evening, in league matters however they had an impressive 1-1 draw with title chasing Linfield at Windsor Park last Saturday. Like Warrenpoint Town, Portadown had a great result last time out in the Premiership as they held league leaders Cliftonville to a 1-1 draw at Shamrock Park.
The last time the two clubs met was back in October with the Ports coming back from 2 goals down to win 3-2 thanks to strikes from Lee Bonis, Stephen Teggart and a Sammie McLeod header, this was Portadown’s second successive victory at Milltown following last season’s 3-1 victory at the same venue (PFC’s first ever competitive win at Milltown), it is also Matthew Tipton’s men only Premiership victory so far this season.
Warrenpoint Town have an impressive record over Portadown with seven wins in their last ten games but Portadown manager Matthew Tipton will be hoping to continue the good recent form against the Point at Milltown on Saturday.
Warrenpoint Town will be missing three key defenders for Saturdays game as Gavin Peers, Colm Deasy and Steven Ball are all suspended.
Portadown manager Matthew Tipton and his assistant David Miskelly are of course no strangers to Warrenpoint Town after guiding them to Championship success and promotion in 2017 during a 15 month spell in charge before departing for Shamrock Park in February 2018.
Here’s what Portadown manager Matthew Tipton had to say ahead of tomorrows game
We go to Warrenpoint tomorrow & whilst I’m loathe to pinpoint any one game as must win I think everyone knows the importance of getting 3 points tomorrow. I have full belief in the players as our performances in getting points against many of the top teams has shown when we are mentally & physically on our game we are a match for anyone. We must carry the same mindset & endeavour tomorrow as we showed last Saturday.
Warrenpoint have picked up some good results lately & will take heart from their draw v Linfield last Saturday so we know they will be fully up for this game.
We will likely still be without Adam McCallum & Nathan Kerr tomorrow but hopefully both will be back for next week. At this stage of the year as well as injuries it’s always a worry players will pick up illnesses which is inevitable I. The winter months however with covid still amongst us we have to err on the side of caution until we get results back. Thankfully we have been ok for the past few months however it’s still vitally important that the players are limiting their outside contacts which is harder to do around the Christmas season.
The officials are – Referee – Jamie Robinson / Assistant 1 – Andrew Nethery / Assistant 2 – Brian Wilson / 4th official – Barry Monaghan
