Portadown are back in Danske Bank Premiership action tomorrow (Sat 19 March) when Coleraine are the visitors to Shamrock Park, kick off 3pm
Portadown come into the game off the back of a 1-0 victory over Ballymena United in the Danske Bank Premiership last Saturday at Shamrock Park thanks to a Adam Salley strike while Coleraine were in League Cup final action last Sunday, losing 4-3 to Cliftonville at the National Stadium after leading 2-0 in a real final for the ages.
Coleraine are on a poor run of form with only three Premiership victories in their last eight and a total of four wins in their last eleven in all competitions.
Tomorrow will see Coleraine definitely without the suspended James McLaughlin who picked up a straight red in the cup final while Jamie Glackin and Conor McKendry will be doubts after both had to be replaced during the game due to injury.
Coleraine would win two of the three meetings between the sides last season with the other fixture ending in a 1-1 draw, a Adam Salley stunner sealing a point for the Ports at the Showgrounds in February. The last time the two teams met was in October 2021 with Coleraine running out 2-0 winners at the Showgrounds with an OG from Paul Finnegan and a Matthew Shevlin goal securing all 3 points for Oran Kearney’s men. Portadown would see red cards twice in their three fixtures last season with the Bannsiders with Lee Bonis being sent off in the meeting in October 2020 and Adam Salley being dismissed in February 2021, Coleraine would also have three penalties awarded to them in the three fixtures between the sides last campaign.
This season the clubs have met three times with Coleraine winning both fixtures at the Showgrounds – 2-0 in October 2021 and recording another 2-0 success in the Irish Cup back in February thanks to goals from Lyndon Kane and Josh Carson. It was a 0-0 stalemate at Shamrock Park when the clubs met back in January.
You have to go back to February 2016 for Portadown’s last competitive victory over Coleraine, a 3-1 win at Shamrock Park in the Irish Cup thanks to goals from Ken Oman, Gary Twigg and Philip Lowry. In league matters it’s New Years Day 2015 since the Ports sealed all 3 points against Coleraine, a 1-0 win at the Showgrounds thanks to a Mark McAllister header while the last league win against the Bannsiders at Shamrock Park was a 2-0 win back 14 December 2013 with goals from Chris Ramsey and Gary Twigg. In fact Coleraine have won 9 of the last 11 (one of these being an automatic 3-0 win) Premiership meetings between the sides.
Portadown manager Paul Doolin had the following preview for supporters
Tomorrow is another big game, Coleraine are a decent team. We played them at the Showgrounds in the Irish Cup and I thought we played well so I’m hoping we perform to a similar standard again.
We have to try and win our home games and when you throw in our current situation, we’re not safe or clear of anybody. We’ve got to get consistency and continue the good recent run we’re on
