Portadown are back in Danske Bank Premiership action again tomorrow evening (Tuesday 11 April) when we take on Newry City AFC at Shamrock Park, kick off 7:45pm.

Both Portadown and Newry City AFC come into the game on the back of victories, Newry City AFC were 2-0 victors over Carrick Rangers on Friday evening at the Loughview Leisure Arena while Portadown beat Ballymena United 1-0 at Shamrock Park thanks to a Cathair Friel goal.

The last time the two sides met was back in March in an unforgettable game at the Showgrounds – Portadown led 2-0 after 20 minutes with goals from Stephen Teggart and Paul McElroy but found themselves 3-2 down going into injury time only to score two late late goals through Josh Archer and Benny Igiehon to win 4-3. The last time the two sides met at Shamrock Park Newry City AFC ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Daniel Hughes, James Teelan and Ciaran O’Connor after Alberto Balde had put the Ports in front.

Portadown will be without the suspended Paul McElroy while Newry City AFC will be missing Ryan McGivern who was dismissed in Newry City AFC’s win on Friday night.

Portadown manager Niall Currie had the following preview for supporters

We’re a bit concerned with the fitness of Bushy (Cathair Friel), he is struggling and obviously with Paul McElroy missing it would be a hammer blow to lose Cathair as well for this game as he’s been outstanding – we’re hopeful of Cathair making but it’s very much touch and go and is what it is but if he’s out we’ll just have to get on with it.

We know the situation tomorrow night, we need to win the game but we know it’ll be a tough night for sure as Newry City AFC know they only really need one or two wins to keep them right.

We just need to concentrate, be at our very best and make sure we’re right and if we’re all of those things then we’re capable of beating any of the bottom six.

In our situation there’s no doubt we need all the luck in the world but ultimately we’ve got to look after ourselves and making sure we’re at our very best and that’s exactly what the plan will be.

While online tickets for matches still remain, a cash gate is now also available at each game at Shamrock Park for HOME SUPPORTERS ONLY (except in the event where a game has sold out online in advance of the game). We would add however that purchasing your ticket online remains the best way to guarantee your seat for games and would still actively encourage supporters to avail of the facility. Portadown FC also operate a ‘Kid for a Quid’ scheme which sees any child U16 admitted to the game for £1 when accompanied by a paying adult – up to 3 U16s with any one paying adult.

A reminder too about the Ports Hub facility at games at Shamrock Park which give you match info, player stats and exclusive interviews. To access the Ports Hub simply scan the QR code placed on every other seat’s backrest at Shamrock Park (as well as in the clubrooms) and you will give brought to a host of great content, think of it as your digital matchday programme!

With more families and community / youth groups visiting Shamrock Park on match days, the club has decided to re-launch our FAMILY AND COMMUNITY AREA.

BLOCK B in the home stand has been designated as this area, a traditionally slightly quieter block and further away from opposition supporters.

We recognise that football matches are noisy and passionate experiences for players and fans alike but we would also like children, families and community visitors of mixed abilities and needs to feel comfortable when they visit a match, for some, their very first football match.

Guidelines for supporters sitting in Block B will be clearly displayed at the front of that area and we encourage all patrons in the block to follow them:

  • PLEASE BE AWARE OF THOSE AROUND YOU.
  • PLEASE USE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE.
  • BE POSITIVE TOWARDS PEOPLE ON THE PITCH.
