Portadown are back in Playr-Fit Championship action tomorrow (Sat 21 October) when we face H&W Welders at Shamrock Park (Kick off 3pm).
Portadown come into the game off the back of a 2-0 win over Newington on Sunday at Inver Park while H&W Welders were beaten 2-1 by Dundela at Wilgar Park.
So far this season H&W Welders have played 11 league games, winning 5, drawing 2 and losing 4, they’ve only won two of their last 6 Championship fixtures and currently sit 7th in the Playr-Fit Championship.
The last time the two clubs was this season, on 2 September, with H&W Welders picking up all 3 points in a 1-0 win at the Blanchflower Stadium thanks to a Michael McLellan penalty.
For the last meeting between then two clubs at Shamrock Park you’ve to go back to August 2019 with the Ports winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Lee Bonis and Greg Hall.
On tomorrows game Niall Currie commented
I always emphasise after a defeat and feel thats it’s not the defeat but how you react to it and I thought the boys went down to a very difficult venue and matched a very good Newington team in all departments on Sunday.
I know some will think we were lucky after ‘Buckys’ treble save but we should of been out of sight going in at half time so I was delighted with my boys response to a very disappointing day against Dundela.
I remember the last time we played H&W Welders and it hurt deep for me and more importantly the players but they have reacted with great character from then and it’s fair to say we are in a good place going into this. We know the Welders hold the same aspirations as us in regards to promotion and have backed that up with acquisitions like Parkhouse and others but like I always say, if we are right we are a match for any team in this league, so we will continue to focus on being at our best as when we are we can go toe to toe with any team in this league.
