Portadown are back in Playr-Fit Championship action this Saturday (16 December) when we face Ards at Shamrock Park (Kick off 3pm).

Portadown come into the game off the back of a 2-0 win over Loughgall in the BetMcLean Cup Quarter Final a week on Tuesday evening however in league matters it was a 2-0 defeat to Dundela last time out while Ards picked up a point at home in a 2-2 draw with Ballinamallard United last Saturday.

So far this season Ards have played 20 games in the Championship, winning 6, drawing 6 and losing 8 – they currently sit in 10th place.

The last time the two clubs met was back in September at Clandeboye Park with the Ports running out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Paul McElroy and Ryan Mayse. For the last meeting between the two at Shamrock Park you’ve to go back to December 2019 when a Matthew Tipton managed Portadown ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Adam Salley and Lee Bonis.

There’ll be quite a few familiar faces in both the Ards dugout and in the Ards squad tomorrow, of course former Portadown manager & player Matthew Tipton is now in charge at Ards while on the Ards playing side Michael Ruddy, Adam McCallum, Eamon Scannell and George Tipton all wore the red of Portadown under Matthew Tipton.

On tomorrows game Portadown manager Niall Currie commented

First and foremost all the boys would like to wish Chris Rodgers a speedy recovery, he’s one of many we have had to suffer with a nasty injury this season, along with Dougie Wilson and Paul McElroy, so the last thing we needed was to hear how serious Chris’s injury is.

I have to say that I’m really over the moon with our players as many have stepped in and we have had to play them out of position and they have got on with things this last few months, so I can’t praise them highly enough – we beat Loughall last Tuesday missing five senior players which tells me a lot about this group.

We look forward to welcoming Matthew and his Ards team on Saturday, a club I have great affection and affinity towards obviously with some great memories and looking forward to seeing some great friends that I made in my many years there, but this is a business and we know this is a huge game and like I have said many times, we are at home and hopefully our supporters will gather strong to push our boys hard while we will focus purely on being at our best.
