Three time Irish Cup winners Portadown begin their Clearer Water Irish Cup campaign this afternoon as they take on Carrick Rangers in the 5th round of the competition at the Loughview Leisure Arena.

Portadown manager Niall Currie could hand debuts to no less than five players this afternoon in the form of new January signings TJ Murray, Zach Barr, Jack Henderson, Jamie Browne & Ciaran Dobbin while Carrick Rangers could introduce their new signing, Australian midfielder Will Arnold.

The last time the two clubs met was back in April 2023 in the Premiership with the Ports running out 3-1 winners at Shamrock Park thanks to goals from Josh Archer & a Cathair Friel brace. For the last meeting between the clubs at the Loughview Leisure Arena you’ve to go back to November 2022 and a 2-0 win for Carrick Rangers.

Portadown have a wretched recent record at the Loughshore Hotel Arena losing nine of the last ten with our last victory in Carrickfergus coming back in April 2016 when a last gasp Garry Breen strike went a long way to securing our Premiership safety that season. There have been 22 goals between the two sides in the last six games at the Loughview Leisure Arena, unfortunately though Portadown have only scored six of those with the other sixteen coming from Carrick Rangers. In fact Portadown have only one win in their last 8 games at all venues against Carrick Rangers.

The last time the two sides met in the Irish Cup was in 2010 with Portadown winning a 5th round replay at Shamrock Park thanks to a Richard Lecky goal, the original fixture at Taylors Avenue had ended 1-1 with Gary McCutcheon on target – Portadown would reach the Irish Cup final that season before being beaten 2-1 by Linfield.

So far this season Carrick Rangers have played 24 Premiership matches, winning 8. drawing 3 and losing 13 – they currently sit 8th in the Sports Direct Premiership.

Today will be Portadown’s 257th Irish Cup tie with their record reading Played 256, Won 126, Drew 43 and Lost 87.

On todays game Niall Currie commented

We’re all looking forward to today, it’s been wonderful with our new players training with 18 and it means we now have a chance to heal a few players who have been carrying knocks for a few weeks.

With the new boys coming in it means competition for places is here now and our bench will be strong this afternoon for the first time I can remember.

It’s the Irish Cup and I think all our supporters know how I have treated the cup competitions, we will be massive underdogs with Carrick Rangers now at a different level with so many full timers , but I expect us to give them a real game.
