Portadown are back in Playr-Fit Championship action tomorrow afternoon (Sat 13 January) when we travel to the Blanchflower Stadium to face H&W Welders (Kick off 3pm).

Portadown come into the game off the back of a penalty shoot out win over Premiership opposition in Carrick Rangers in the Clearer Water Irish Cup on Saturday at the Loughview Leisure Arena while H&W Welders were beaten 4-1 by Premiership Champions Larne at the Blanchflower Stadium.  In relation to the clubs last Championship games, it was a disappointing 3-1 defeat for Portadown away to Annagh United on Boxing Day while H&W Welders beat table topping Dundela 2-1 on 27 December.

The last time the two clubs met was back on the 21st October 2023 with the Ports running out 5-2 winners at Shamrock Park thanks to goals from Paul McElroy, Chris Rodgers. a brace from Ryan Mayse and a Caolin Coyle strike, the Ports had taken a 3-0 half time lead however the Welders came storming back in the second half thanks to two goals from Matthew Ferguson to make it 3-2 before the Ports made the game safe with two goals inside the last 15 minutes. For the last time the two clubs met at the Blanchflower Stadium you’ve to go back to the 2 September and a 1-0 win for H&W Welders thanks to a Michael McLellan penalty.

So far this season H&W Welders have played 22 league games, winning 11, drawing 4 and losing 7, they currently sit 5th in the Playr-Fit Championship, level on points with Portadown.

Portadown have won 8 of the last 10 meetings between the two sides.

Portadown manager Niall Currie commented

There has been a great buzz about our boys this week and the new boys have came in and lifted everyone.

We have a massive schedule ahead over the next month with still being in all cup competitions, unfortunately bar big Zach (Barr) the rest of the boys are unavailable for the BetMcLean Cup semi final but thankfully we can go into the Glenavon game with players fresh.

Eoghan McCawl had his first session tonight since picking up an injury against Ballinamallard United before Christmas so will hopefully be ready for Glenavon game and the same with Kenny Kane, we’ve been able to rest up our skipper so he should be fresh and ready to go for that as well.

More importantly, we have H&W Welders tomorrow and know it’s a huge day, but if we go about our business like we did against Carrick Rangers then we know we’re more than capable, this is a huge month, we all know that, but as I said before, with our bulking of the squad I feel we can fight on all fronts.
