Portadown are in Clearer Water Irish Cup Quarter Final action this evening when we face Cliftonville at Shamrock Park, kick off 7:45pm.

Portadown come into the game off the back of a 2-1 victory away to Ballinamallard United last Saturday in the Championship while Cliftonville suffered their second consecutive defeat in the Premiership with a 3-1 defeat at Stangmore Park against Dungannon Swifts.

Cliftonville’s path to the Quarter Final of the Irish Cup has seen them beat Coleraine and Loughgall while the Ports have dispatched Carrick Rangers and Bangor.

Cliftonville currently sit third in the Sports Direct Premiership having played 31 games, winning 21, drawing 4 and losing 6.

The last time the two clubs met was back in February 2023 with Cliftonville running out 3-0 winners at Solitude thanks to goals from Ronan Hale (2) & Jonny Addis. The last time the two clubs met at Shamrock Park was in September 2022 with Cliftonville coming away with all 3 points with goals from Ronan Hale and Ryan Curran securing a 2-1 win for the Reds, Jordan Jenkins grabbed the Ports goal.

Portadown have a pretty sorry recent record at Shamrock Park against Cliftonville losing ten of the last thirteen and without a win in the last seventeen on home soil. The last win over Cliftonville at Shamrock Park came back in February 2011 with goals from Alan Cawley and Kevin Braniff. In fact Portadown are without a competitive win against Jim Magilton’s men home and away in the last twenty two games with the last victory against Cliftonville coming in January 2014 at Solitude thanks to a Gary Twigg goal.

The first Irish Cup meeting between the clubs came back in 1972 with the Ports winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Vic Fleming and the Morrison brothers while the last Irish Cup meeting between the two came in 2010 with a 2-1 win for Ronnie McFall’s men at Shamrock Park thanks to goals from Tim Mouncey and Gary McCutcheon.

Cliftonville would put the Ports out in the Quarter Final of both the 2006/07 and 2007/08 competition while the Ports would knock Cliftonville out at the Quarter Final stage in 1994/95 and the 6th round stage in 2001/02 and 1999/2000 – In fact on 3 of the last 4 occasions that Portadown have been losing finalists in the Irish Cup they’ve put Cliftonville out along the way (1999/2000, 2001/02 & 2009/10).

Cliftonville would beat Portadown in the 1979 Irish Cup final with a winning goal in the 89th minute from Tony Bell breaking Portadown hearts, this in fact would be the last time the men from Solitude would lift the Irish Cup. The two teams were set to contest the 1998/99 Irish Cup Final however Cliftonville would be dismissed from the competition after fielding an ineligible player in the semi final with Portadown handed the trophy.

The teams have previously met 11 times in the competition with The Ports having 6 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats.

On the game Niall Currie commented

What a couple of weeks we have ahead as far as I’m concerned, yes it’s not ideal falling behind the rest of the league in games but would I swap a thing? Absolutely not!

There are no priorities, we fight all games on the same front and if we come short it falls on me but not a chance I would swap a Quarter Final at Shamrock Park against a top team or a Final against an elite team.

We look forward to welcoming a top team and manger on Friday night to our place, as always we will try to ensure we are at our best and if we are, things open, we are realistic at this club and understand we’ll need Cliftonville to have an off night but we will just concentrate on us being at our best.
