Portadown Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Aaron McCarey following his release from Glentoran at the conclusion of his contract.

Aaron (32) has an abundance of top-level experience having played first team football for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Walsall, York City, Portsmouth, Bury and Ross County as well as playing in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League during his time at League of Ireland side Dundalk.

The shot stopper has also represented the Republic of Ireland at Under 17, 18, 19 and U21 level and was named in senior international squads by both Giovanni Trapattoni and Martin O’Neill with his last call up coming as recently as 2018.

Aaron can list Warrenpoint Town and Cliftonville as former Irish League clubs he has represented prior to signing for Glentoran in 2021.

On his latest signing Portadown manager Niall Currie commented

Aaron’s signing was completely out of the blue if honest, but once I heard there was a possibility of him leaving the Glens we had to throw our hats in the ring with such a top level proven goalkeeper.

His career speaks for itself and at only 32 he’s coming into his prime as a keeper.

The fact he was so open to coming here is testament to him and the club, we’re over the moon to get him on board.

Aaron added

I’m delighted to sign – From the minute Niall got in touch it felt right with his plans and vision for the club.

Portadown have a rich history and something I’m aware of, I’m looking forward to getting going in pre season.
