To celebrate our centennial season in the Irish League, and our new deal with adidas & Pro:Direct Clubhouse, Portadown will wear a one-off commemorative shirt inspired by the 1980s classic most notably worn by George Best in this afternoons final Sports Direct Premiership game of the 2024/25 campaign when we play Ballymena United at Shamrock Park.
In October 1981 George Best guested for Portadown in an exhibition match against Glenavon with the game played at a packed Shamrock Park, the Manchester United & Northern Ireland legend captained the Ports to a 1-0 victory.
Portadown Football Club were founded in 1887 but it would be thirty seven years before they would make it to the top table.
In May 1924 Billy Mullen saw that ambition come to fruition when an application to join the Irish League was successful. Billy Mullen and Thomas Cordner were selected as the club’s reps to the Irish League and they immediately set about building a squad capable of competing with the best clubs in the country.
Portadown began their inaugural season in the Irish League in 1924/25 with our opening game against Glentoran at the Oval on 23rd August 1924. In that first season, Portadown finished fourth, two points behind Belfast Celtic with Queens Island taking second place, behind champions Glentoran.
These one-off limited edition shirts will only be worn in this afternoons game and will not be available for retail however the player worn shirts from today will be available to purchase by contacting Dave Wiggins on 07525132630 and are priced at £100 – they will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
