Portadown Football Club is delighted to announce that Benji Wells has signed his first professional contract, committing his future to the club.
Benji came through the Portadown Youth set-up playing with the U10 and U12 teams before returning to the club in 2023 as part of our Under 16 NIFL squad and has went on to be a regular part of both our U18 and reserve squads.
The 17 year old is an attack minded player who is comfortable playing on the left or right wing and can also play as an attacking midfielder behind the striker.
Benji is part of the NIFL scholarship programme and was part of the 20 man squad who travelled to Portugal to represent the Northern Ireland Football League and Football Management Company at their annual two week training and development camp in 2025.
Portadown reserve manager, Andy Newell had the following comments on Benji signing his first professional contract
My assistant coach Ryan McGivern identified Benji as a player with real potential in our very first preseason training session in July, since then we have worked hard to challenge and support Benji’s development.
He is a quality young lad with a top class attitude and is a player that will get you excited to watch football matches.
It’s brilliant to see the football club invest in another player that has come through the academy. We want the best local players at the club in every age group developing into the first team and this is another example of the pathway here.
Benji has been allocated squad number 34 and everyone at Portadown Football Club congratulates Benji on signing his first professional contract and wishes him every success in the years ahead at Shamrock Park.
