It is with much sadness that we have learnt of the passing of former player Billy Cathcart.
Billy was an Ahoghill man and had been playing with Ballyclare Comrades, when he came to the attention of Portadown manager Gibby McKenzie.
Twenty-year-old Carthcart signed for Portadown in July 1958. He had to bid his time in the reserves, with the Ports making an impressive start to the new season, but he got his chance in September when another form Ballyclare player, Billy McCullough was transferred to Arsenal.
That transfer paved the way for Billy to make his debut at centre-half, against Derry City on 11th September 1958. Billy went on to spend just over two seasons at Shamrock Park, before returning to Ballyclare Comrades in November 1960.
