Portadown have a Mid-Ulster derby to look forward to this weekend as their first pre-split Sports Direct Premiership fixture when we travel to Mourneview Park to take on Glenavon on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
Portadown come into the game following a 0-0 draw with Crusaders at Shamrock Park a fortnight ago while Glenavon were beaten 3-0 by league leaders Larne at Mourneview Park last time out.
Glenavon were convincing 3-0 winners when the sides last met back in February at Mourneview Park, Portadown had won the previous two Premiership meetings of 2025/26 with a 3-1 win in October and then took the Boxing Day bragging rights with a 1-0 win thanks to a Luke Wilson header, both games taking place at Shamrock Park.
Glenavon have put a good run of form together at a vital stage of the season as they fight for survival and have collected more points in their last five premiership games (10 points) than they did in their opening 20 Premiership fixtures. The Lurgan Blues have won six of their last eleven league games at Mourneview while in stark contrast the Ports have lost six of their last seven away games and haven’t won on the road since 6 December 2025 and a 4-0 win at Seaview against Crusaders.
Glenavon can boast an impressive home record against their Mid-Ulster rivals, winning the last four and unbeaten in eight with Portadown’s last Premiership win at Mourneview Park coming in October 2020 with a Stephen Murray double alongside goals from Lee Bonis and Aaron Burns seeing the reds winning on the opening night of the 2020/21 season during the midst of the covid pandemic and games being played in front of limited crowds.
Glenavon currently sit bottom of the Sports Direct Premiership, 1 point behind 11th placed Crusaders but with a game in hand. Portadown currently occupy 9th position and are 11 points clear of their Mid-Ulster rivals with 5 games to play. A win for Niall Currie’s team tomorrow will secure Premiership football for the Ports again next season.
