Portadown Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Matthew Tipton as the club’s new Head of Academy.
Matthew brings a wealth of experience to the role, both as a player and manager, alongside extensive knowledge of youth player development gained through his work with the Irish FA’s National Academy.
The Welshman enjoyed a playing career which included spells with Oldham Athletic, Macclesfield Town, Dundalk, Portadown, Linfield and Ballymena United, before moving into management with Warrenpoint Town and Ards, as well as Portadown, where he spent four years at the helm and guided the club to Championship success in 2020.
Following his departure from Ards in 2023, the 46-year-old moved directly into youth development with the Irish FA, where he has worked across the JD Academy programme, taking on a number of coaching roles across the national youth development pathway.
His varied experience across senior football, professional football and international youth development will provide a valuable addition and asset to Portadown’s Academy as the club continues to strengthen its youth structure, develop young talent and create a clear pathway towards senior football.
Speaking following his appointment, David Jeffrey commented
I’m absolutely delighted that Matthew has accepted the role.
We had an impressive number of applicants come through the recruitment process, but Matthew proved to be the standout candidate.
He came through a rigorous recruitment and selection process, and we’re delighted to have him take on the position of Head of Academy.
Matthew will take up his new role later this month, following the conclusion of his commitments with the Irish FA.
